When do you use a PTZ Pan/Tilt Zoom Camera?

There are so many types of security camera systems on the market today that making a choice could seem to be impossible. Depending on what you want to protect and where will ultimately determine what type of system that you need, this article specifically looks into the use of the PTZ Pan/Tilt zoom camera and when it should be used. Firstly let us explain exactly what it is and the features available when using this form of security camera.

PTZ stands for pan tilt zoom, the basics behind the camera are they allow the user to have dynamic control and provide in depth zooms in any direction and can be used indoors or outdoors to monitor activity in any environment. Depending on which type of system that you buy will determine on how much you will be paying, many of the PTZ cameras are expensive but the functionality is high. There are ranges of quality depending on how much you are paying; some of the features to look out for will include the following.

Some of the most recent models of PTZ cameras will provide high resolution images and have 360 degree rotation of the camera. These will need to be ceiling mounted so that they can be used to their most effective, If the camera is being used outdoors then the temperature ranges vary and most can operate effectively between minus 10 and plus 50 degrees. Check on the tilt speed and pan speeds, the quicker that the camera can move the better chance you will have of getting the best images. Most people will tend to use this type of camera in high security buildings such as banks, corporate buildings and government locations. They are extremely good to use as security points in open areas such as receptions as they provide greater coverage than the static wall mounted cameras. With the 360 degree rotation there would be no areas within the proximity that cannot be covered by the camera.

Other locations that you are likely to find the PTZ security camera would be in a shopping centre, shop and town center. Often these cameras provide excellent picture quality along with the flexibility of the controller either being able to manually adjust the picture and track and zoom in to get an excellent picture of the individual or incident as it occurs. If you take a look in town centres you will see the cameras on top of poles, these are strategically placed around the town to cover all the areas and be able to track effectively to help the police and security staff to stop crime. The use for these cameras would be more in the corporate markets than the home market; their functionality is geared more for a monitoring team to view events as they happen on the security monitors and feed the information back.
